Bring your trombone voice to jazz.
Connect a reliable sound with phrasing, listening and ideas that are distinctly yours.
Yonathan’s jazz trombone lessons can include swing phrasing, articulation, melody, harmony, ear training and improvisation. Students can work on school jazz-band music, a standard or a specific musical goal.
- Melody and musical phrasing
- Jazz articulation and time
- Harmony heard and played
- Ensemble and solo preparation
Keep the melody at the center
A tune is more than a chord sequence. Work can begin with its contour, rhythm and phrasing before moving toward improvisation. Hearing the melody clearly gives a student something concrete to respond to rather than a scale to run.
Make rhythm part of the sound
Articulation, note length, rests and placement affect how a phrase feels. A lesson may use a short rhythmic figure or an ensemble passage to connect listening with execution. Playing fewer notes clearly can be a more useful task than immediately playing faster.
Find a path into the harmony
Intervals, guide tones and simple chord-tone lines can make a progression less abstract. Ear training and keyboard demonstrations can help connect a written symbol to its sound. The complexity of the exercise should fit the player, not just the tune.
Bring an ensemble challenge
Jazz-band parts, solo sections and audition music can guide focused work. Send the relevant material or requirements before the lesson when possible. Lessons support preparation but do not promise a chair placement, audition result or professional engagement.
Questions before you begin.
Can I start improvising with limited experience?
Yes. Exercises can begin with a small set of notes and a simple rhythmic idea.
Can we work on big-band music?
Yes. Bring the part and describe the passage or performance goal.
Do lessons include general technique?
Yes. Sound, slide coordination and reading remain part of the work when they support your musical goals.
A good lesson starts with a conversation.
Tell me the instrument, neighborhood and a few possible times. We’ll discuss the fit before you book.
