Make the piano your own.
Move beyond the notes on the page and begin making musical choices of your own.
Jazz piano lessons with Yonathan can cover harmony, swing phrasing, listening, chord voicings and improvisation. Lessons are adapted to your existing piano skills, whether jazz is your main goal or a new part of your playing.
- Chord symbols and harmony
- Ear training and phrasing
- Small improvisation exercises
- Classical-to-jazz transitions
Begin from a tune, not a list of scales
A melody and a small harmonic pattern can introduce the sound of jazz more clearly than a disconnected exercise. The lesson might focus on keeping a pulse, finding the important notes in a chord or answering a short phrase with a phrase of your own.
Understand what the harmony is doing
Chord symbols, intervals, voice leading and common progressions can be explored at the keyboard. You can learn to hear and play a manageable voicing before trying to fill every register. Reading and ear training remain useful alongside improvisation.
Practice improvisation in small steps
Restrictions can help: use a few notes, vary a rhythm or leave a deliberate rest. A small musical idea gives you something to listen to and develop. The aim is communication, not just running through more notes.
Connect to your other music
Jazz skills can support pop accompaniment, arranging and composition. Tell Yonathan what you already play and which recordings or musicians interest you. The lesson plan should address your actual goals rather than assume every jazz student needs the same repertoire.
Questions before you begin.
Must I already be advanced?
No. Describe your current piano experience so the starting tasks can be appropriate.
Can I combine classical and jazz?
Yes. Lessons can include reading and technique alongside harmony and improvisation.
Can we work on a lead sheet?
Yes. Bring a lead sheet or a tune you want to understand, using music you are authorized to use.
A good lesson starts with a conversation.
Tell me the instrument, neighborhood and a few possible times. We’ll discuss the fit before you book.
